By Paul Evans Brake problems on day one of the recent Rallye d’Antibes robbed Meirion Evans of a points-scoring Peugeot 208 Rally Cup result – although he did get to show his true pace on day two, which included setting the fourth fastest time over one of the world’s most famous rally stages, the Col […]

Swansea Harrier Jonny Hopkins led the way with a new personal best and a European Championship qualifying time as a strong contingent of Welsh athletes competed in Belgium at the weekend. Ten athletes were supported by Welsh Athletics to travel to the International Flanders Athletics Meeting in Oordegem, and the investment certainly paid off with a glut of qualifying times, personal bests and season’s best. Steeplechaser Hopkins, who has been in excellent form already this season finishing sixth at the Commonwealth Games and more recently winning the Welsh 5K Championships, finished third just behind Spanish duo Daniel Arce and Eric Penalver. The occupational therapist at the Princess of Wales Hospital clocked a time of 8.30.52 – three and a half seconds inside his previous best set at the same meeting last year. The time has also been confirmed as being inside the qualifying mark for the 3000m steeplechase at this summer’s European Championships in Berlin.
Primary school children, world champions and Olympic gold medallists raced around the streets of Aberystwyth on Saturday as the town’s cycle festival hit top gear. From age group Welsh Criterium Championships in the morning to the professional Ovo Energy Tour Series in the evening, the seaside town was the place to be as it attracted cycling fans and competitors from around Wales and beyond.
Chaz Davies charged through the field to salvage a fifth place finish in the second World Superbikes race at Donington Park. The Powys-born rider had dropped to 12th after being forced wide on the opening lap of the 23-lap race at the Leicestershire track.
Melissa Courtney powered to victory at the Westminster Mile to continue her stunning start to the season. The Welsh star took the tape on Spur Road on four minutes 35 seconds in a race which also incorporated the British Championships.
Pembrokeshire’s Joel Makin won the battle of Wales, beating Rhiwbina Squash Club’s Peter Creed in straight games. Makin, aged 23 and from Haverfordwest, lifted the Tring Open title thanks to an 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 win in 45 minutes against Caerphilly-born Creed in the final. It was an impressive performance by Makin in the Professional Squash […]
Former Bluebirds defender Semi Ajayi is intent on living the Championship dream again. The big Nigerian was described as ‘the new Sol Campbell’ by an Arsenal fans website when he was at the Emirates under Arsene Wenger, but he has struggled to make the big breakthrough. He failed to make a first team appearance for […]
David Brooks has insisted he used England as “stepping stone” to play for Wales, his first choice from the outset. The Sheffield United youngster is set to earn his third full Welsh cap on Tuesday when Ryan Giggs’ side play a friendly against Mexico in California. Brooks was England’s face of the future as they won the Toulon Tournament last summer, but now the Blades ace is anxious to convince that his switch of allegiance was always on the cards.
Ellis Jenkins will co-captain Wales on tour this summer, along with Cory Hill. So how does that work, exactly? The Cardiff Blues flanker tells Dai Sport how he intends to share the role as well as the referee charm lessons he has learned from Sam Warburton. How long did you celebrate for after the Cardiff Blues’ European Challenge Cup win in Bilbao? We had a big couple of days celebrating and then a few days off to relax and then re-focus. We came back into the Welsh camp last week to do some strength and conditioning work and then began the ruby stuff, albeit without the Scarlets boys, on Tuesday.
Gareth Bale’s situation at Real Madrid is “complicated” according to manager Zinedine Zidane. The inspiration and saviour for Wales on so many occasions, Bale proved match-winner for his club with a gravity-defying, momentous, awe-inspiring overhead kick that swing the Champions League final away from Liverpool and in the Spanish club’s favour on Saturday night. Immediately after scoring a second stunning goal, man-of-the-match Bale suggested the 3-1 victory in Kiev could be his final game for Madrid where he has recently struggled to be a starting presence under Zidane.
Valley Cougars easily beat a depleted Bridgend Blue Bulls side 82-0 at Treharris on Saturday in the only game of the weekend in the Welsh Premier League. Bridgend suffered six withdrawals on the morning of the game and were forced to give three players their rugby league debuts.
Chaz Davies is hoping for an improved showing in Sunday’s second World Superbikes race at Donington Park after missing out in the first race.
Phil Bennett is backing Rhys Patchell to make the Wales No.10 shirt his own this summer – despite the Scarlets’ loss of their Guinness Pro 14 crown. Patchell was part of the Scarlets team overwhelmed 40-32 at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Saturday, where the Irish province completed an historic Pro 14 and European Champions Cup double. Leo Cullen’s men ran in five tries and Jonathan Sexton kicked 13 points as they became the first Celtic side to win the domestic and European Cup titles in the same season, a feat their 2011 and 2012 predecessors failed to achieve.
Wayne Pivac believes his Scarlets side are already proving that winning the Guinness Pro title 12 last season was not a one-off. The defending champions were ruthless in disposing of Glasgow last week and they will pose a real threat to Leinster’s hopes of clinching an historic double at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening after the Irish province triumphed again in Europe a fortnight ago. The Scarlets’ last visit to Dublin didn’t quite go according to plan, however, as they were hammered by Leinster in the Champions Cup semi-final last month.
The 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain will begin in South Wales for the first time as some of the world’s top cyclists race from Carmarthenshire to Newport on the opening stage of Britain’s national Tour on Sunday 2 September. Neil Warnock’s Premier League Bluebirds will again start their pre-season match programme against Welsh League Taffs Well. Newly-promoted Cardiff City will then be heading off to Cornwall and Devon on tour with Craig Bellamy’s under-23 team joining the senior squad. There was strong talk of a pre-season trip to North America, but Warnock is keen […]
The men’s final of a World-ranking squash tournament in Hertfordshire later today will be an all-Welsh affair. Caerphilly’s Peter Creed will battle it out with Joel Makin, from Pembrokeshire, in the Arnold Homes Tring Open $15,000 championships this afternoon (5pm). Creed, the World number 58 who plays out of the Rhiwbina club, has fought his […]
James Davies believes playing against the Leinster back row in the Guinness Pro 14 final will be even tougher than facing the Springboks or Pumas on Wales’ summer tour. The Scarlets’ fetcher was himself turned over by Leinster when the two teams met in the semi-final of the Champions Cup at the same Aviva Stadium at which they will clash in Saturday’s final. Dan Leavy took the plaudits and Davies and co. were left licking their wounds. “It is basically going to be like playing against the Irish back row this weekend – and they won the Grand Slam this year and are ranked at number two in the world,” said Davies.
It was an emotional evening in Cardiff when Celtic Dragons remembered one of their own at the Sport Wales National Centre. Prior to centre pass in their Vitality Superleague match against Manchester Thunder the teams, management and crowd observed a minute’s silence in memory of the life of former Celtic Dragon and Wales under-21 player […]
