This Is My Strongest Wales Team Yet, Says Warren Gatland

Warren Gatland has taken Wales to one Word Cup semi-final, but less than a year out from the next tournament he believes he has a stronger squad than at any time during his 11 years in charge. The Wales coach is spoiled for choice in many positions and whilst Ireland may be setting a higher benchmark by beating New Zealand, Gatland’s team are also showing themselves to be tournament contenders. The Kiwi says it will be a difficult task picking a team to face South Africa this week, but another

Evans Ends 2018 WRC Season In Style Down Under

Elfyn Evans finished the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship season off in style by finishing sixth on Rally Australia – underlining his ‘team-mate of the year’ status by helping Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia win their sixth world title. The destiny of this year’s title was decided when rivals Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul clipped a tree and retired their Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC on the final day. Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja, who had an outside chance of winning the title, also crashed out of the event in their Toyota Yaris WRC.

Liam Williams Hits The 50 Mark But Says He’s Got A Battle For 51st

Liam Williams has suggested even two tries on his 50th appearance for Wales does not guarantee him selection against South Africa. The Saracens wing celebrated his half century by scoring twice in the 74-24 demolition of Tonga at the Principality Stadium, contributions which inspired 50 unanswered points in 37 minutes in the second half. The Tongans had hit back to level the scores at 24-24 at one stage, but the second half surge set Warren Gatland’s side on course for a first clean-sweep in the autumn.

Warren Gatland Gets A Lift From His Bench As Springboks Lined Up

Warren Gatland believes it was mission accomplished in terms of testing Wales’ strength in depth against the Tongans. The Wales coach was happy with the impact of his bench in their emphatic 74-24 victory at the Principality Stadium after the Pacific Islanders had briefly threatened an upset. Tonga were level at 24-24 early in the second half having scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter of the game, but the introduction of scrum-half Aled Davies, lock Cory Hill and replacement fly-half Rhys Patchell saw Wales romp to an eighth Test win in a row.

Evans In Position To Secure Ogier A Sixth WRC Title

Elfyn Evans has positioned himself perfectly between team-mate Sébastien Ogier and team rival Thierry Neuville after day two of Rally Australia – a situation which would give Ogier a sixth FIA World Rally Championship drivers’ title if the leaderboard was to remain the same after the third and final leg on Sunday. Driving brilliantly over the loose rainforest gravel roads of New South Wales, Evans and co-driver Dan Barritt continue to play a significant role in the outcome of the world title – being a huge help to Ogier and Julien Ingrassia and a proper thorn in the side to Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai). Evans set an equal fastest and a second fastest time through the Raleigh stage in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC to make sure he remained in seventh place – and crucially 30.6 seconds ahead of Neuville.

Wales v Tonga . . . Where The Newbies Go Cruising For A Bruising

Any game against Tonga means the post-match bruise count will be well above average. But Wales should embrace the pain today, says Harri Morgan. Only by travelling the bumpy road can they learn to keep the World Cup wheels turning. Whizzing down the garden on my first bike – a Raleigh Bluebird, recently freed from its stabilisers – I was equally aware of the danger and the need to concentrate. Focus on the process: pedal hard, look ahead and keep control of the bars.
