Welsh girls between the ages of 6-18 will get the chance to learn golf through the new Girls Golf Cymru scheme launched by Wales Golf. Girls-only coaching sessions, with the emphasis on fun, social and friendship aspects, will be delivered by clubs across Wales. Statistics show 13per cent of golf membership are female and Wales Golf wants to help more women and girls into the sport so it can truly become ‘Everyone’s Game, Anywhere.’

Golf clubs in Wales are increasing membership, bucking international trends, according to the latest Wales Golf Clubs Survey. It shows roughly a third of clubs have gained members – and more than double the numbers than at another third of clubs where membership is falling, while the final third of clubs retained a stable membership.

Shaun Edwards looks to be on his way to France after finally rejecting the offer of a new contract to stay with Wales after the World Cup. Warren Gatland’s defence coach for the past 11 years has turned down the opportunity to remain as part of incoming head coach Wayne Pivac’s team, the Welsh Rugby Union have announced. Frank Lampard joined the long list of those paying tribute to Alan Curtis on Wednesday night – after the Derby manager had also joined the guard of honour. Welsh legend Curtis embraced with England legend Lampard before the Swans’ 1-1 draw with the play-off chasers at the Liberty Stadium. The ceremony was to mark King Curt’s final home involvement as assistant coach before his retirement – an association as player, coach, scout, manager and general all-embracing emblem for the club that stretches back 40 years.

British Junior Rally Championship frontrunner James Williams showed impressive pace and skill when he was invited to test a Hyundai i20 R5 rally car for the first time. Having previously rallied front-wheel drive Opel Adam and Ford Fiesta R2s, the Newcastle Emlyn youngster was invited by the Hyundai Customer Racing team to test the much more powerful four-wheel drive machine in Kielder forest. The car was in fact the same one in which fellow Welsh driver Tom Cave had won last weekend’s Pirelli International Rally.

The Derby manager returns to the club where he played 11 games on loan in the 1995-96 season, on the cusp of instant success in his first job in management. A victory for Derby at the Liberty Stadium would all but clinch their play-off place in the Championship top six against opposition whose own hopes of a return to the top flight disappeared last weekend with their 2-2 draw against Hull City.

Newport County boss Michael Flynn is refusing to get carried away after his side’s 2-0 home win over Oldham pushed them into the play-off places with one game to go. Goals in the 48th and 79th minutes from skipper Mark O’Brien – the latter credited to him post-match by referee Craig Hicks after spotting a deflection off his knee after Robbie Willmott’s shot – mean the Exiles need only to beat Morecambe on Saturday to reach the play-offs. Warren Gatland has told Shaun Edwards to get on with it and make up his mind about whether or not he is staying with Wales. The Wales head coach fears the continuing debate over whether his assistant will sign a new deal with the Welsh Rugby Union could become a distraction in the build up to the World Cup in Japan. Warren Gatland has denied being approached by England to take over from Eddie Jones after the World Cup. Gatland will leave his role with Wales after this year’s tournament following a successful 12 years in charge and has been linked with becoming England head coach. The 55-year-old said he has been contacted over his future but insisted the Rugby Football Union was not among the suitors so far.
