Evans In With A Shout After Punishing Day in Sardinia

Elfyn Evans finished a long, hard, hot and punishing first full day of Rally Italy this evening in a very strong fifth place and a mere 20.3 seconds off the lead – despite a problematic morning and a time-consuming overshoot in the afternoon. The 30-year old Dolgellau driver reported a strange feeling with his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC on the morning loop of four gravel stages, which is not what you need on such a difficult, narrow and twisty loose-surface event where large car destroying rocks lie in wait by the side of the road. Co-driven by Scott Martin, that didn’t stop Evans reach midday service just 5.9 seconds shy of the top spot, which was a truly magnificent performance.

Pritchard Leads Large Rally Contingent To Belgium

A large contingent of top Welsh rally drivers are heading to Belgium today, all aiming for Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship points on tomorrow’s Rally van Wervik. Leading the international tour is reigning champion and series leader Jason Pritchard. The Builth Wells ace has scored maximum points on all three rounds so far this year, but has left his super-successful North Road Garage-backed Focus WRC at home and taken his lesser used and less powerful Fiesta S2000 to West Flanders instead. It’s a bit of a calculated gamble, as he and co-driver Phil Clarke took the S2000 to Wervik twelve months ago and retired with clutch problems. This could give Damian Cole a great chance to close the points gap on Pritchard, although his Get Connected/Energizer-backed Focus WRC isn’t fixed after the last outing and he has also swapped cars and is taking his Fiesta WRC. The Abergavenny driver will also have a different co-driver in the form of Dale Bowen.

He has signed a three-year deal and replaces Graham Potter, who hot-footed it to Brighton and the Premier League after just a year in charge.

Evans Makes A Flying Start In Sardinia

Elfyn Evans made a good start to Rally Italy today, setting the seventh fastest time on the opening stage in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC – a mere 1.8 seconds off the fastest time. Around 20,000 people packed into the former motocross track in Ittiri, not far from the host town of Alghero, to watch the FIA World Rally Championship stars in early action. It was a tricky little stage, with a big artificial jump and a very deep watersplash, but it was no trouble for Evans and co-driver Scott Martin as they set a good time.

Crunch Event For Evans As Rally Italy Starts Tonight

Rally Italy starts tonight, and Elfyn Evans is hoping that the rugged and sun-baked stages on the picture postcard Mediterranean island of Sardinia will be kind to him as he attempts to close the gap on the top three in the FIA World Rally Championship. The Dolgellau ace touched down in Sardinia lying fourth in the points table, although the three drivers ahead of him have already amassed twice as many points. But the fast and narrow rock-lined loose surface tracks leave absolutely no margin for error, and running first on the road is a considerable disadvantage – while starting fourth on the road, which is what Evans will do, is much better. If there is to be a dramatic turn in fortune, one that will see the Welshman challenge for the world title this year, it has to start in Sardinia this weekend. And Evans has fond memories of the island, as it is here where he made his world rally car debut in 2013. In five previous starts, fourth in 2015 is his best result.

Never Say It’ll Never Be Warren Gatland Again

Never say never again, admitted James Bond and Warren Gatland has confessed that he, too, was wrong to pre-empt his destiny. The Wales coach – confirmed on Wednesday as the British and Irish Lions coach for 2021 – had famously claimed he would never do the job again after the hurt he felt in New Zealand two years ago. But, like Sean Connery back in the movie of 1983, Gatland has gone back on his vow. In two years’ time, he will be head coach for a third Lions tour – back where it all began for him in 2009, when he was a losing coach for the only time with the tourists as assistant to Sir Ian McGeechan.

Pritchard – a former triathlete injured in a cycling accident – also beat another British sculler, Andy Houghton, to claim third spot. And for good measure, the Swansea para-rower also pulled a large 2,000m personal best that put him within two seconds of the world record.

Sam Vokes Backs Wales To Win From A Long Way Back On The Grid

It was Wales’ second defeat in the space of four days after a 2-1 loss to Croatia on Saturday.
