Warren Gatland says he is excited about returning to New Zealand to take charge of the Chiefs – a move that will put him on track to coach the All Blacks. Ryan Giggs became the latest Welsh footballing star to be inducted onto the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame’s exclusive Roll of Honour on Wednesday night. The Manchester United legend and current Wales manager, was one of five additions to the Roll of Honour at a ceremony held at Cardiff City Stadium. Also honoured were former Wales Grand Slam rugby star Steve Fenwick, Commonwealth Games golden girls Jazz Carlin and Michaela Breeze, and the former Wales netball player and coach, Wendy White.
Will Vaulks insists he has joined the “biggest club in Wales” after completing his move to Cardiff City. The Bluebirds – who have also confirmed the signings of targets Joe Day from Newport County and Curtis Nelson from Oxford – have tied up their deal with Rotherham for Vaulks for a fee which will rise to £3m with add-ons. Midfielder Vaulks made his international debut in March and won his third Wales cap in the recent 2-0 Euro 2020 qualifying defeat to Croatia.

Five Welsh athletes have been named in Great Britain’s team for next month’s European Under-23 Championships in Sweden. Middle distance star Jake Heyward will renew his rivalry with Europe’s best young 1500m runners, while brother and sister Joe and Hannah Brier, will join Shannon Malone and Melissa Roberts in the sprint relays. The new season in Wales begins on Thursday evening with Barry poised to revive memories of continental adventures from yesteryear when they host Cliftonville in the Europa League – a match that will be streamed live online by S4C. For Barry fans the preliminary round tie – against Northern Irish opponents – will be a nostalgic nudge towards their glory days of two decades ago. That was an era when Barry rubbed shoulders with Aberdeen, Dynamo Kiev and Porto as they proudly carried the Welsh flag into European battle.
The Welsh Sports Hall of Fame will induct new faces into their number tonight (Wed) at their annual dinner in Cardiff. Lynn Davies – one of the originals – tells Graham Thomas why this particular honours system is worth the effort. When Lynn Davies jumped into history in 1964 he did more than simply become the first Welsh athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal.
