Welsh Athletics have encouraged anyone with concerns about the behaviour of Phil Banning to come forward following the jailing of the former national coach. Banning has been sent to prison for seven-and-a-half years for what a judge described as a “regime of sexual abuse” against teenage girls at the English athletics club where he first coached. The once highly respected middle distance coach, who ran internationally for England and represented Great Britain at the 1975 European Indoor Championships, pleaded guilty at Winchester Crown Court to 18 charges of indecent assault against four girls dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Welsh athletes will be out in force at the Manchester International athletics meeting on Wednesday night. As well as a Wales national team, there will be a strong contingent of Welsh athletes in the Great Britain Juniors team, League Select and two All Star Select teams, who will compete against England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Welsh throwing will be particularly well represented by a number of athletes who have enjoyed a season of titles, records and representative honours.

Wales’ day in the sun as the world’s No.1 is already over but Warren Gatland is more concerned about what today brings from his medical department. The Wales coach watched his team fail to live up their most recent billing as the top-ranked team in the world as they lost 33-19 to England at Twickenham. Far more worrying for Gatland than being knocked off a perch vacated temporarily by New Zeland was the knee injury that forced Gareth Anscome to be helped, limping heavily, from the field.

A dominant defensive performance has earned the South Wales Warriors a home semi-final showdown with London Blitz B in the British American Football Southern Conference play-offs. The Warriors defence only gave up its first points with less than two minutes to play when the Apache kicked a 26-yard field for something to show from their visit to Llanharan’s Dairy Field.  Defensive lineman Andy Price celebrated his 42nd birthday by helping shutdown the Apache running attack which struggled to make any headway against the aggressive Warriors defence.

Swansea City goalkeeper Freddie Woodman earned praise from his manager after proving a diligent student during a hard-earned point at Derby County. Woodman – on loan at the Swans from Newcastle – saved a first-half penalty that Steve Cooper insisted owed as much to pre-game planning as the keeper’s athleticism.
