Welsh Athletics Offer Direction To Further Possible Victims Of Phil Banning

Welsh Athletics have encouraged anyone with concerns about the behaviour of Phil Banning to come forward following the jailing of the former national coach. Banning has been sent to prison for seven-and-a-half years for what a judge described as a “regime of sexual abuse” against teenage girls at the English athletics club where he first coached. The once highly respected middle distance coach, who ran internationally for England and represented Great Britain at the 1975 European Indoor Championships, pleaded guilty at Winchester Crown Court to 18 charges of indecent assault against four girls dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s.

When Neil Met Isaac . . . Love At First Sight

Neil Warnock’s heart must have missed a beat or two when new signing Isaac Vassell scored the winning goal against Luton Town last weekend. Why? Because the Bluebirds boss knew that one day the 25-year-old was going to come good and he had wanted to sign him when he was at Rotherham. In many ways it was love at first sight when Warnock first saw his new striker on a football field. It may have taken the Cardiff City boss three years to finally get his man, but the 70-year-old couldn’t be happier.

It’s 2015 All Over Again As Gareth Anscombe Limps Out And Other Wales Stars Are Fighting For Fitness

It was Rhys Webb and Leigh Halfpenny  in 2015 and now the Welsh pre-World Cup injury jink has struck again with Gareth Anscombe falling at the first hurdle at the weekend. The 2019 Grand Slam outside-half, a key figure in Warren Gatland’s offensive plans, limped out of Sunday’s 33-19 defeat to England at Twickenham and had his worst fears confirmed today when a scan on his right knee confirmed cruciate ligament damage.  A timescale for his recovery has not been given, but the Welsh Rugby Union said in a statement that Anscombe will miss the whole tournament.

Wales Peak Early And Not For Long . . . But Warren Gatland Has Other Worries On His Mind

Wales’ day in the sun as the world’s No.1 is already over but Warren Gatland is more concerned about what today brings from his medical department. The Wales coach watched his team fail to live up their most recent billing as the top-ranked team in the world as they lost 33-19 to England at Twickenham. Far more worrying for Gatland than being knocked off a perch vacated temporarily by New Zeland was the knee injury that forced Gareth Anscome to be helped, limping heavily, from the field.

Dominant Defence Help South Wales Warriors To Semi-Final Spot

A dominant defensive performance has earned the South Wales Warriors a home semi-final showdown with London Blitz B in the British American Football Southern Conference play-offs. The Warriors defence only gave up its first points with less than two minutes to play when the Apache kicked a 26-yard field for something to show from their visit to Llanharan’s Dairy Field.  Defensive lineman Andy Price celebrated his 42nd birthday by helping shutdown the Apache running attack which struggled to make any headway against the aggressive Warriors defence.

The World Cup Begins Soon . . . But Just Not At Twickenham On An August Afternoon

The World Cup countdown starts here. But Harri Morgan says it would be wrong to read too much into the numbers at this stage. England v Wales in August is unlikely to be too reliable an indicator of what is about to come in Japan. The humble pre season fixture. The first opportunity for those in the stand to catch a glimpse of a new signing or an academy product, whilst those on the pitch, sweat and gasp as they seek to mine a commodity, which no matter the humidity or altitude, cannot be manufactured on the training paddock – match fitness.

Gareth Davies Has Shunned The Beer . . . But Still Intends To Raise A Glass If Wales Stay On Top Of The World

If Gareth Davies had accepted all the offers to buy him a pint since Twickenham and the World Cup of 2015, then he certainly wouldn’t be going to this year’s tournament. Instead of going to back to face England today, he would probably be drying out in a clinic somewhere – although he would still have a good story to tell of the night he scored the try that pulled the rug from under the hosts. Four years on and the Scarlets No.9 will be part of a Wales team aiming to get their warm-up plans off to a positive start by proving by they are worthy of their new status as the No.1 ranked team in the world.

Freddie Woodman Proves Swansea’s Super Student . . . But Steve Cooper Demands More

Swansea City goalkeeper Freddie Woodman earned praise from his manager after proving a diligent student during a hard-earned point at Derby County. Woodman – on loan at the Swans from Newcastle – saved a first-half penalty that Steve Cooper insisted owed as much to pre-game planning as the keeper’s athleticism. The keeper denied Martyn Waghorn four minutes before half-time and also made a second-half double save to earn his side a point from a 0-0 draw at Pride Park in game of few clear chances.
