Swansea Harrier Jonny Hopkins is one of a number of Welsh athletes eyeing Great Britain senior vests this season after successful performances at the Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships on Saturday. With places at the Tokyo Olympics and European Athletics Championships up for grabs this summer, Hopkins is hoping to replicate the kind of form which saw him finish sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Sam Gordon led a Welsh sprinting showcase at the national indoor championships on Saturday. The Cardiff athlete took the men’s 60m title with a championship best performance as all eight finalists finished under seven seconds. In a medal clean sweep for Cardiff Athletics on their home NIAC track, Gordon claimed gold in 6.69 ahead of silver medallist Jeremiah Azu and third place Dewi Hammond, who both clocked 6.81.
Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre hosted a hugely entertaining Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships on Saturday. The most successful individual medal winner on the day was decathlete Curtis Matthews, who claimed two Welsh titles and a bronze medal.
Natalie Powell has give en her hopes of competing at this summer’s Olympic Games a huge boost after triumphing at the Tel Aviv Grand Prix. The 29-year-old’s victory was her first Grand Prix gold medal and her first since 2017 when she was became the first Welsh judoka to be ranked world No 1.
The Justin Edinburgh Stand at Leyton Orient – and a tight match between his former clubs – was a fitting tribute to the former Newport County boss, according to current Orient manager Ross Embleton. County fell to a 2-1 League Two defeat on Saturday, as a new stand at the Breyer Group Stadium was named after both club’s ex-boss, who died in June shortly after guiding the London club back into the Football League. The West Stand will now be known as the Justin Edinburgh Stand, and Edinburgh’s wife Kerri and children Charlie and Cydnie witnessed the unveiling, as well as a first home win in 10 attempts in all competitions for the O’s.
Neil Harris has blamed modern society for obscene chanting from Cardiff City fans during the 1-1 FA Cup draw at Reading. As play continued during the first half, an announcement was made over the public address, warning the “away fans” to desist from their alleged racist and homophobic behaviour. Cardiff later posted a statement on their official website which read: “Cardiff are aware of the allegations made against visiting supporters at the FA Cup tie at Reading.
The Ospreys are searching for a young, charismatic coach to take over and have added Dwayne Peel to a hit list of options. But he’s in a very close three-way battle for victory, and goes to bed tonight just 4.9 seconds ahead of his Toyota team-mate and six time world champion Sébastien Ogier, while Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) is a mere 1.5 seconds further behind in third. Such has been the pace of the top three, that the fourth-placed driver – none other than nine time world champion Sébastien Loeb (Hyundai) – is over two minutes further adrift.
Callum Paterson is hoping an extended run in the FA Cup with Cardiff City can make up for his bitter disappointment in missing out on a League Cup final with Hearts. The Scottish international was injured in a freak accident the day before the semi-final clash with Inverness seven years ago and had to undergo foot surgery as a result. Hearts reached the final, but were beaten 3-2 by St Mirren.
Tributes have been flooding in for Welsh Athletics vice chair Ron Odunaiya who passed away this week after a short illness. Odunaiya was a hugely popular and familiar figure on the Welsh athletics circuit as an active member of the governing body’s board and in support of his three children Amy, Alice and Elliot who have all competed for Wales. Welsh Athletics plans to pay tribute to him at this Saturday’s Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships at Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre.
Elfyn Evans starts today’s leg of the Monte Carlo Rally in second position, having led for most of yesterday after a fantastic performance in his Toyota Yaris. The longest day of the event consisted of two loops of three stages and featured a range of weather conditions, including ice, snow, rain and mud as well as sections of dry asphalt. Starting the day fourth overall following Thursday night’s opening tests, Evans was fastest on all three of the morning’s stages as he moved into the lead of the rally.

Wales midfielder Joe Morrell is hoping to realise a personal ambition – and complete a remarkable football transformation – by being part of Ryan Giggs’ UEFA Euro 2020 finals campaign this summer. Since going on loan to Lincoln City from his parent club, Bristol City, last summer, so much has changed in a short space of time for the 23-year-old. Gareth Bale has picked up another injury playing for Real Madrid that threatens to further disrupt his season in Euro finals year. The Wales star has an ankle problem which forced him to leave the field during his club’s victory over Unionistas de Salamanca, 3-1, in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night. Bale scored the opening goal but was unable to continue beyond the 53rd minute and manager Zinedine Zidane said the new injury will need to be assessed.
