Wayne Pivac says ending his disappointing first Six Nations campaign as Wales coach with a resounding win over Scotland next weekend is a “no brainer” following the 33-30 defeat by England on Saturday. The New Zealander has seen his side slip to three successive defeats – after opening with a 42-0 whitewash of hapless Italy – for the first time since the 2007 Six Nations. That dismal run came just before his compatriot Warren Gatland took over and enjoyed a highly successful 12-year tenure.
Sam Costelow suggested the Scarlets may have gem on their hands after he masterminded Wales U20s to a stunning victory over England on Friday night. Costelow – who is leaving Leicester in the summer to return to Wales with the Scarlets -went through the scoring card to bag 18 points and lay the platform for a magnificent 23-22 win at Kingsholm.
Wales will wear black armbands against England at Twickenham today following the sad passing of former international centre Matthew J Watkins at the age of 41. In 2013, Watkins was diagnosed with a rare form of pelvic cancer and in January this year revealed it had spread to his head. In recent years Watkin helped […]
Advantage Cardiff Devils. Captain Joey Martin and his team are top of Elite League after firing seven goals past Sheffield Steelers at the Viola Arena. Wales hockey ace Rupert Shipperley has been offered a full-time place in Great Britain’s men’s programme in the lead-up to this summer Tokyo Olympics. Dozens of Welsh youngsters will be heading to across the border to take part in the Virgin Money Giving London Mini Marathon on April 26. While the likes of Natasha Cockram and Josh Griffiths take part in the main Virgin Money London Marathon, a 36-strong team of Welsh teenagers will compete in the mini version. Boys and girls teams of six – plus with two reserves – have been selected to represent Wales in each of the Under-13, under-15 and under-17 categories, thanks to their performances at the recent Welsh Cross Country Championships in Pembrey.
Josh Navidi believes Wales can do a clinical job against England at Twickenham on Saturday – almost as clinical as the precautions the squad have followed this week in order to stay healthy. With the coronavirus now having a deep impact on sport – and in particular a significant effect on the Six Nations – Navidi has revealed that extra measures have been followed within the squad to avoid any possible contagion. As Premier League footballers have been ordered to stop handshaking and high-fiving, with games in Europe being played behind closed doors, or postponed altogether like the tournament’s Ireland v Italy and Italy v England fixtures, then it’s clear the effects are growing day-by-day.
Wales midfielder Hayley Ladd has insisted the team can use tonight’s friendly at home to Estonia as a stepping stone towards qualification for the Euro 2021 finals. There may be no points at stake at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground, but Ladd believes the game will form part of the squad’s vital preparations for the crunch qualifiers against the Faroe Island and Norway. The Manchester United player said: “We’ve got a brilliant squad of players who are playing at some of the biggest clubs in the world.
Cardiff City have put their summer pre-season tour plans for a trip to Portugal on hold because of the coronavirus outbreak. Bluebirds boss Neil Harris wanted to take his players away before the start of next season, but those ambitions have been undermined due to the spread of the virus. “We’ve identified going to Portugal to a resort I know well,” said Harris.

American Aaron Fox, Sheffield Steelers heads coach, believes he will be able to use knowledge gained from Friday’s Elite League clash at Cardiff Devils to help his team win the Challenge Cup. Eddie Jones has said England “owe Wales one” after their painful defeat in Cardiff last year as they prepare for Saturday’s resumption of old rivalries at Twickenham. France are the only team left in the Six Nations who can complete a Grand Slam but England could yet be crowned champions if Les Bleus stumble in the final two rounds. For Wales, it is about preventing a third straight defeat after losing to Ireland and France, but they do have the confidence of last season’s 21-13 victory in Cardiff on the way to their own Grand Slam.
After the Six Nations admitted nothing was off the table – including big bags of cash – when it comes to negotiating the next TV deal for the tournament from 2022, Robin Davey says the pay back would be unacceptable. For every pound gained, there would be a future follower lost. Surely not! Surely, the Six Nations chiefs are not going to succumb, they’re not going to take the money and say to hell with the general public. For right now the very future of the ever-popular Six Nations tournament and its television rights are up for discussion.
England legend Martin Johnson has told Wales they must be brave if they are have a chance of beating England at Twickenham. As coach Wayne Pivac considers some bold selection calls for Saturday’s Six Nations clash – including throwing in teenager Louis Rees-Zammit and recalling Liam Williams – Johnson reckons fortune will favour the brave. The former World Cup-winning captain believes Wales are better than their recent run of successive defeats to Ireland and France suggests, but insists they will only succeed with a positive mindset.

Manu Tuilagi has warned Wales he intends to offer a painful test of their defensive resolve in the opening minutes at Twickenham on Saturday. Whether it is training, matches or chess, Tuilagi likes a fast start and he will hope to help England do just that when they host Wales in the penultimate round of fixtures in the 2020 Guinness Six Nations. The Grand Slam champions visit Twickenham on the back of consecutive defeats and Eddie Jones’ men will be favourites to inflict a third straight loss on Wayne Pivac’s side.
