David Brooks has set his sights on making a major impact for Wales at next year’s delayed Euro 2020 finals. The Wales forward might have struggled to make this summer’s tournament, originally scheduled for June, due to a serious ankle injury which has meant he has not played a game this season. But the re-scheduling of the finals means Bournemouth star Brooks, as well as injured Wales teammate Joe Allen, have 12 months to get back to their best.

Aled Davies has revealed he is preparing for the re-arranged Paralympic Games in his back garden. On the day the new dates of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics were announced, multiple gold medallist Davies was already focussing on the re-set target. Because of the coronavirus crisis, this year’s Olympics – due to take place from  July 24, 2020 to August 9 this year – and the Paralympics, scheduled between 25 August 25 and September 6, have been postponed.

Alix Popham has sent out an emotional plea to Welsh rugby fans to tune in to the funeral of his former Newport, Dragons and Wales team mate Matthew J Watkins today. Watkins lost his brave battle to a rare form of pelvic cancer on March 7 at the age of 41. He won 18 Welsh caps and played for Newport, the Dragons, the Scarlets and Gloucester. Due to restrictions on public gatherings during the current lockdown, only close members of his family will be able to attend what would otherwise have been a massive funeral at Thornhill Crematorium in Cardiff.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games – and the Wales team preparing for the Birmingham event – could face major disruption as a result of the decision to re-schedule the Tokyo Olympics for 2021. The Olympics will now take place between July 23 and August 8 in 2021 – a move that could have serious implications for the Commonwealth Games the following year. The push back from 2020 means next year’s World Athletics Championships could now have to be re-scheduled in 2022, causing a potential clash with the next Commonwealth Games.

Wales lacrosse captain Dr Eleanor Gaastra has put her sporting ambitions to one side as the coronavirus pandemic forces the focus on to her day job in intensive care. The 31-year-old is a specialist anaesthetist at Salisbury District Hospital and admits her thoughts currently barely extend beyond keeping her patients – and herself – healthy. Gaastra told the Sunday Telegraph: “Everybody in the country’s life has changed. The focus is obviously on coronavirus – and so it should be.

Swansea City believe “huge interest” in Wales’ cancelled game with Austria will encourage Ryan Giggs and his players to visit the Liberty Stadium in the future. Wales’ friendly with fellow Euro 2020 finalists Austria, which was due to be played in Swansea last Friday night, was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The game would have marked the return of the national team to Wales’ ‘second city’ for the first time in seven years, with Croatia the last international visitors there in March 2013.

Workers are making rapid progress on converting Parc y Scarlets into a temporary hospital to provide extra beds for the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contractors have been working tirelessly on site since Monday as they look to complete a project that will see up to 500 beds installed at three separate locations on the stadium site. The biggest project is being undertaken at the indoor arena training facility, which will house 252 beds. There will also be a hospital area in the Quinnell Lounge in the South Stand and the first floor concourse.

The spread of coronavirus might have hit Welsh rugby hard, but Neath RFC hope good times are around the corner with the introduction of a synthetic 4G pitch planned at The Gnoll. Championship outfit Neath have seen their season cancelled due to the impact of Covid-19 and one of Wales’ most historic clubs have had tough times in the last few years. Prior to coronavirus causing the current campaign to be abandoned, Neath were fifth in the Championship and the club have grand plans both on and off the field.

FIFA’S Nations League Draw held in Amsterdam couldn’t hold a candle to the DAIsolate Cup – even if the names for the second round were being pulled out of a Tupperware tub! Fronting the draw for the Ammanford AFC-inspired virtual FIFA football tournament were S4C’s Sgorio favourites, Dylan Ebenezer and Nicky John. As the draw was streamed live on YouTube from living rooms at different ends of Wales, Ebzy commented: “They’ve even shaken the Tupperware box – fantastic! FIFA have got nothing on this.

Trebanog have thrown down the gauntlet – having slapped Carn Rovers around the head with it – in the first round of the DAIsolate Cup. The Rhondda Valley club, who play in the South Wales Alliance Premier, sent out a chilling warning to the rest by thrashing their hapless opponents 23-0 in the first round of the home-based FIFA tournament for Welsh clubs.

Cardiff are hoping to reward their Indigo Group Premiership players with new contracts – even if they have no trophy and medals at the end of this season. The Arms Park club are in talks with Cardiff Blues over a range of proposals for next season after the current race for the title came to a shuddering halt. It was Shane Williams’ final match for the Ospreys and confirmation again of his genius for timing. Wales hockey star Leah Wilkinson is determined to fulfil her Olympic dream after Tokyo 2020 was postponed during her sabbatical from teaching. In January, Wilkinson started an eight-month break from Ewell Castle School in Epsom – where she is a history teacher and Head of Year 10 – to allow her to focus on preparation for Tokyo. The postponement of this summer’s Games due to the coronavirus pandemic is a difficult enough situation for full-time athletes with competitions, schedules and training plans to rearrange.

This time, Tom Jenkins looks at the Wales national football team who just happen to celebrate their 144th birthday this week. One man who spans a fair chunk of that history is former Wales midfielder and manager Brian Flynn. Brian Flynn was almost an international record-breaker before scoring arguably the greatest-ever Wales goal on his first full appearance. On the 144th anniversary of Wales’ first fixture – a 4-0 defeat to Scotland in Glasgow on March 25, 1876 – Flynn’s finish against the ‘Tartan Army’ in the 1975 British Home Championship stands tall in the Welsh pantheon of great goals.

The Dragons and Scarlets will have to wait to discover if and when they can play their European Challenge Cup quarter-finals after EPCR decided to postpone this season’s knock-out matches. In a statement from CEO Vincent Gaillard on Tuesday, EPCR said they had taken the step because of an unprecedented situation with the threat to public health and safety posed by COVID-19. “European club rugby tournaments have been suspended since 16 March and with the health of all stakeholders of primary importance, the decision has been taken to postpone the semi-finals and Finals Weekend of the 2019/20 season in addition to the quarter-finals originally scheduled for April 3-5,” said Gaillard.

The first round proper of The DAIsolate Cup – Ammanford AFC’s FIFA tournament – threw up some intriguing ties and introduced a promising comedy double act from Lee Trundle and Dylan Ebenezer. With all football suspended for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus crisis, the Welsh League One outfit decided to invite clubs from all over Wales to compete in a FIFA video game tournament. A magnificent total of 128 entries – represented by individuals from their clubs – threw their names into the hat for the competition which will raise charity cash as well as the morale of football fans throughout the country.
