Great Britain 1, Germany 3

Cardiff Devils players Evan Mosey and goalie Ben Bowns were in magnificent form for Great Britain in their World Championship clash with Germany in Slovakia.

With 10 minutes left the teams were locked at 1-1 and Olympic silver medalists Germany were struggli0ng to gain control.

Mike Hammond scored his first GB goal to tie things up at the Steel Arena in Kosice.

Germany, though, are a team with huge quality including Edmonton Oilers prolific NHL forward Leon Draisaitl, a 23-year-old from Cologne.

But the Brits went toe-to-toe with their highly rated opponents, battling every inch of the way.

GB were disciplined, taking only two minutes in penalties, and hugely competitive against a team they who include NHL players and are a major force in the ice hockey World.

Britain have not beaten Germany for 81 years – since 1938!

GB forward Robert Lachowicz won his 50th GB cap, while Tim Billingsley and Ben Lake made both their debut at his level.

Devils plays Bowns, Mosey, Matthew Myers, Mark Richardson and back-up goalie Thomas Murdy were in the British team with Welsh players Jonathan Phillips and Ben Davies also in the line-up.

Germany scored the first goal after 39 minutes 21 seconds when Moritz Seider netted, assisted by Yannic Seidenberg.

GB refused to buckle and made it 1-1 when Hammond scored after Draisaitl surprisingly lost possession. Hammond finished superbly, shooting between the netminder’s legs from close range.

Yasin Ehliz restored Germany’s lead on a powerplay after 50-39 with Matthias Plachta adding the assist. Bowns saved the first shot, but the puck bounced off his shoulder from three feet.

Draisaitl, who spent a huge amount of time on the ice, made it 3-1 after 52-03 with Plachta and Markus Eisenschmid adding assists.

Mosey was GB man of the match, while Brett Perlini played a prominent role.
